Global Entrepreneur Week THUDFest 2015 Speed Coaching Experience
“Congratulations THUD, THUDFest2015 and L2020”
On Tuesday the 17th of November 2015 Suzanne and I (as Leadership 2020 representatives) joined a panel of professional coaches for what had been marketed to the Johannesburg entrepreneurially minded youth as the Global Entrepreneur Week THUD Speed Coaching experience. This formed part of THUDFest2015. THUD is the acronym for The Hook Up Dinner.
I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Hats off and tremendous applause to the entire THUDFest2015 crew who had initiated what proved to be a most interesting coach-coachee series of interactions for me.
What do you want and why?
Each young aspirational entrepreneur (many of whom are already building businesses, some up to 9 and all at that the same time!) had 10 minutes with me which always began with my asking them this simple question: “What do you want and why do you want this?”
What astonished me during my Global Entrepreneur Week THUD speed coaching experience was that not one of them could succinctly (and without hesitation) answer my question. Not one of these young entrepreneurs knew what they wanted and therefore it followed on logically from this that none of them knew why they wanted to be an entrepreneur other than to make money and live a good life. What this proves to me is our youth have still not grasped what an entrepreneur is – which is, someone who solves societal challenges and makes a difference, for a profit. Their thinking was solely money driven. Whilst I celebrate this, as having a sound money consciousness is good, there is so much more to entrepreneurship and business than just making money…
Seek first to serve, to add value!
Seek to lovingly serve, seek to make a real difference, seek to add true value, seek to improve and uplift how people live, seek to simplify such that greater productivity efficiencies flow – do all this first and more, and, then the money will flow to you. Bottom line is (and South Africa’s young entrepreneurs must understand this) business is so much more than just making money and posting profits. Until you connect with this truth, your business related intent and thought processes will never be whole as you’re fundamentally disconnected from what life is about – a divine connectedness with others!
Through Suzanne and my weekly talk radio show, The Success Show, we have interviewed many successful entrepreneurs, multiple business owners, millionaires and billionaires. What all these people have in common is they know exactly what they “want” and why they want this. I prefer to have my clients use the word “desire” as desire is the starting point of all creation [Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich]. When they are asked the question “What do you want and why do you want this?” they answer with absolute clarity and definiteness of purpose. Just as a master builder receives a perfectly crafted blueprint to build from, so too do these people have a clear picture in their mind as to exactly what their END GAME looks like – they know “their what” and they know “their why.”
No HDD picture in your mind means you’re directionless
It’s this inspired, HDD, picture of development, growth and prosperity which puts the fires in their bellies, which keeps them focused, keeps them innovative, which drives them straight through every challenge and onward to the finish line. They know exactly what’s in it for them (otherwise known as WIIFM “What’s In It For Me”) and they know exactly what’s in it for others (otherwise known as WIIFO “What’s In It For Others”).
They may not always know the HOW – or stated another way – they may not always be crystal clear as to exactly how their “want or desire or dream” will manifest; makes me think of the best laid plans of mice and men. This however does not detract them from relentlessly pursuing their vision and their mission because they know that with effort and persistence, a way will appear – they will be shown the way because by virtue of their powerful thoughts and feelings they will attract and discover the way.
Johannesburg (SOUTH Africa) we have a problem!
I left yesterday knowing that something drastic has to be done and fast too because these youngsters are clueless as to how the mind works. I’m not talking about this half-baked motivational claptrap and goodness me there’s enough of it around right now to last a lifetime – face it, if you’re a clueless entrepreneur and someone motivates you, all you are is a motivated clueless entrepreneur. I‘m talking about understanding the mind (which by the way is not a thing, it is an activity) and how to use your God-given genius to deliberately create the business you desire and receive the rewards you thirst for. The work I do with clients as a success strategist focusses on sorting out the kinks in their mind and getting them to think into superb results.
What I taught during my hour long session (post speed-coaching event) yesterday afternoon had the young audience gasping as my laser-like lessons rocketed through their mind and in to their understanding, lighting up answers as to why they weren’t getting the results they so desperately wanted. Many had a rudimentary understanding of some of the “common coaching tools” used to manifest success such as vision boards, however because nothing was happening they openly acknowledged that their vision board no longer inspired them, quite the contrary, it made them downright miserable and left them feeling dejected!
Enough slick conference stage talk, back to basics!
As a Leadership 2020 representative and given that I do random ad-hoc pieces of work with THUD at annual events, here’s what I believe needs to happen and this is where your organisations need to place much more focus during 2016:
- Less airy-fairy motivation. No matter how many times you land on your back and get up, if you don’t know what you’re doing in “the ring”, you’re going down again friend! More practical teachings as to how to think, act, set goals and create like the super-rich do. They’re not rich and successful by accident, they’re rich and successful because they know exactly what thoughts, feelings, words and actions deliberately create riches and success.
- More education around how to develop a powerful money (significant emphasis required here) and wealth consciousness. The poverty consciousness amongst our youth right now is shocking. They talk a great game about money and riches but their words are empty because the images which they are holding on the screens of their minds (their innermost thoughts if you will) are not ones of prosperity, riches and confidently engineered success but rather of lack, scarcity and deep-seated financial fear.
- A much greater focus on helping these precious young souls to practically develop an abundance mindset – and this is possible. The reason for this is simple – As Within, So Without – or stated another way – what you see on the outside of you (results) is an exact mirror of what’s been going on inside you. No matter how much entrepreneur success related training you provide, if the seeds of prosperity you’re sowing in to their minds are not being landed on fertile soil (an abundance consciousness) the seeds won’t germinate and grow. Riches, prosperity, business success will only ever appear as visible results on “the outside” once “the inside” (their thoughts, feelings, words, actions) has become congruent with producing this.
Thank you Nic Regisford, Leadership 2020 and THUDFest2015 Team
I am deeply grateful to L2020 (more specifically Nicolas Regisford, the CEO) and THUDFest2015 for the Global Entrepreneur Week THUD speed coaching experience and for the opportunity to work with these youngsters on their money blueprint. I honour and appreciate your respective efforts to-date with South Africa and Africa’s youth. The youngsters I worked with, and taught to yesterday, are a marvellous bunch and they hunger for more.
That said, I am encouraging all entrepreneur development organisations (including L2020 and THUD) to collectively drive a Back To Basics initiative which will build within young entrepreneurs the powerful foundation upon which success can be scaled. My distinct sense after yesterday’s Global Entrepreneur Week THUD speed coaching experience is that there are way too many young African entrepreneurs out there who are attempting to build skyscrapers on quick sand; with their very first move they’re setting themselves up for failure.
To your Success,
